NUDE ART (PART 2)

Innocence by the French Romantic painter Paul (Hippolyte) Delaroche (1797-1856).

Delaroche depicts here a "child of nature" in the spirit of Rousseau.

Another fantastic harem scene by the Austrian painter Hans Zatzka (1859-1945). Aodalisque is preparing her bath.
The Delphic Oracle (1899) by the british painter John William Godward (1861–1922).

A nice picture, which could be sold today as "Fantasy-Art". But I doubt that the Delphic Oracle could have been a young chick like this.
Le Manteau Legendaire (1907) by the French Symbolist painter Léon-François Comerre (1850-1916).

Comerre depicts a a young nude woman clutching the cloak of her lover while she is waiting for his return

The awakening of Venus (1741) by the French Rococo painter Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777).

I think it's evident how big the influence of Rococo on modern nude painting was. Many underestimate this great epoch in painting.
Lesbia (1878) by the British painter John Reinhard Weguelin (1849-1927).

Weguelin was a typical Victorian artist and used mostly this popular neo-classical style.
Albayde (1848) by the French painter Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889).

It's a nearly perfect drawn picture. The name is taken from Orientalist poem and refers to an odalisque. Cabanel shows this lethargic and content figure as an object of visual pleasure.
She is lazy, seductive but also dangerous, she's a real femme fatale.
Chloé (1875) by the French painter Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911).

The painting won in Paris two gold medals and was later exhibited in Australia, where its nudity caused some severe scandals. Later it was purchased by an ex-digger for the then enormous sum of £800.
One more of the sweet girls by the French painter Guillaume Seignac (1870-1924).

Innocence

It's easy to say that Seignac is pure kitsch. But I find him very interesting. At first he's a real academic painter of the late 19th century who has his roots deep in the Rococo.
Second, you can discover in this painting signs of Art Deco and of Pin-Up art.
Eva (1889) by the Polish painter Pantaleon Szyndler (1846-1905).

I can't avoid the thoughts that this naive childish model hasn't much to do with the great seductress, the very first in history.
For me the whole thing is a lame excuse to sell a political correct nude painting.
Salammbô (1910)

The French painter Gaston Bussière (1862-1929) is citing here the protagonist of the very popular historical novel by Gustave Flaubert.
Cleopatra by the French neoclassical painter Jean-Baptiste Regnault (1754-1825).

Regnault painted here a historical subject. But this effort emphasizes only how much he stayed in his time. Cleopatra looks a lot like these women of the Napoleonic era. So was more an excuse to paint a woman in such a lascivious pose. She's more the Vamp of a contemporary salon than a historical person.
Susanna bathing (1839) by the French painter Théodore Chassériau (1819-1856).

Chassériau treats this old biblical subject in a more exotic and orientalistic manner. That was the new romantic view.
Sleeping Nymph (1870)

The German painter Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880) is still in the tradition of Neoclassicism but already there can be noticed a kind of rising Symbolism.

EROTIC PAINTINGS AND ART

A Harem Dancer by the French artist Georges Jules Victor Clairin (1843-1919).

An Odalisque French painter Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911).

An Egyptian Princess (1875) by the Austrian painter Hans Makart (1840-1884).

A Harem Beauty by the Italian art deco painter Mario Borgoni (1869-1950). One of the better orientalistic ones.

One more sweet little girl by the French artist Guillaume Seignac (1870-1924). Most are variations of the same subject.

Ceres Bacchus and Venus (c. 1613). A great painting by the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640).

Lindsay is one of my 20th century favourites.
Andromeda and the Nereids (1840) by the French painter Théodore Chassériau,(1819-1856).

Chassériau was a Student of Ingres whose classical influence is here evident.
Slave market (1866) by the French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904).

Despite all "realism" I'm sure that Gérôme never had seen a scene like this. The examination of the teeth is a nice detail but pure fantasy. A buyer of young women wouldn't have been very interested in her teeth.
The Pearls of Aphrodite by the british Victorian era painter Herbert James Draper (1863 – 1920).

Draper was specialized in mythological scenes and mermaids, so here he combined both.
The Nereids (1902) by the French painter Gaston Bussière (1862-1929).

Once more Bussière shows some of his beloved exotic dancers. So it's more a Paris night club scene and nothing mytholocical
Biblis (1884) by the French academic painter William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905).

Biblis fell in love with her twin brother Caunus, who fled from her. She followed him throughout Asia Minor until she died from exhaustion and grief.
Here can be seen a very sad girl, but she didn't look exhausted at all.

EROTIC PAINTINGS AND ART (PART 1)

Evening Mood (1882) one of the typical allegories by the French academic painter Adolphe William Bouguereau (1825-1905).

Another odalisque by the Brazilian painter Oscar Pereira da Silva (1867-1939). It’s easy to see that many artists from Latin America studied in Europe and received their the typical academic training.

Odalisque (1857) by the French painter Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863). Delacroix is regarded as the leader of the French Romantic school and had a big influence on the later Impressionists. He painted various odalisques which emphasizes his interest in exotic and oriental subjects.

Venus Consoling Amor (1751) by the French Rococo painter François Boucher (1703-1770). Boucher is famous for his decorative allegories but usually his enormous influence on late 19th century art is vastly ignored.

Cleopatra Testing Poisons on Condemned Prisoners (1887) by the French academic painter Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889).

Cleopatra is depicted as a beautiful but also a cold and cruel monarch. Without any emotions she’s watching the terrible death of the prisoners. The temples in the back are showing the strong influence of the famous prints of David Roberts.

Wine of Tokai

The beautiful and seductive spirit of wine shows here the Spanish painter Luis Ricardo Falero (1851-1896).

Nice bathing scene by the Victorian artist John Reinhard Weguelin (1849-1927). Weguelin did similar neo-classical subjects like Edward Poynter and Lawrence Alma-Tadema in watercolour.

A pin-up of 1952 by the British illustrator David Wright (1912-1967). Wright was probably the only Non-American pin up artist who was really successful in the United States. And he deserved it as far as I can see.

Some Angels, Nymphs or Goddesses by the Austrian painter Hans Zatzka (1859-1945). One of the typical Neo-Rococo sceneries which made Zatzka so successful.

Bathsheba (1820-25) by the German painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794- 1872). Even though Schnorr is assigned to the Romantic the painting shows a strong neoclassical influence.

Silver (1886) by the English classical painter Albert Joseph Moore (1841–1893). Moore was specialized in beautiful young women in a classical backdrop.

Susannah at Her Bath; (1874) by the French academic painter Hugues Merle (1823-1881). Merle was a friend and rival to William Bouguereau. Here he presented a nude as the classical biblical subject.

Reclining Nude by the French academic painter Delphin Enjolras (1857–1945). Enjolras is best known for his intimate portraits of young women illuminated by lamp or firelight.
